LACODE Cleans and Preserves the Historic Maghar al-Tahin in Baalbeck

Reviving a Hidden Gem: LACODE Cleans and Preserves the Historic Maghar al-Tahin in Baalbeck

With the support and presence of Mr. Ahmad Al-Tufayli, President of the Baalbeck Municipal Council, the Lebanese Association for Coexistence and Development (LACODE) undertook a symbolic and purposeful mission: the cleaning and preservation of Maghar al-Tahin, one of Baalbeck’s lesser-known historical sites.

This initiative is more than a cleanup — it’s an act of revival, a gesture of care toward a site deeply embedded in the memory of the city, with the hope of returning it to public consciousness and future use.

A Site with a Story

Maghar al-Tahin — literally “The Mill Caves” — stands as a quiet witness to Baalbeck’s layered past. In 2019, LACODE rehabilitated the site in collaboration with UN-Habitat and with generous support from the Italian government. Today, with renewed efforts, the association seeks to preserve this space and reimagine its role in serving the city’s cultural and environmental identity.

Community, Heritage, and Hope

During the cleaning activity, members of LACODE worked side by side, driven by a vision to protect the natural and historical wealth of Baalbeck. Their message is clear: heritage sites — no matter how forgotten or hidden — deserve attention, maintenance, and revival.

Mr. Al-Tufayli, who joined the effort, emphasized the importance of partnerships between civil society and local government in sustaining Baalbeck’s legacy.

“Places like Maghar al-Tahin connect us to our roots. By maintaining them, we protect our identity and open new possibilities for cultural tourism and community engagement,” he noted.

Toward a Greener, Culturally Rich Baalbeck

For LACODE, the cleaning of Maghar al-Tahin is part of a broader vision: to integrate natural and historical landmarks into the life of the city, and to ensure that future generations experience them not only as ruins, but as living spaces filled with meaning and memory.

With ongoing collaboration and local support, Maghar al-Tahin may yet find new life — as a cultural trail stop, an ecological space, or even an educational site for schools and visitors.

Because every stone has a story, and Baalbeck still has many stories to tell.
